Saratoga Race Course Oral Cancer Screenings Feature High-Tech Identafi 3000 Ultra Device

Renowned "Airport Dentist" Dr. Robert Trager to Conduct Free Public Oral Scans at Racetrack on Wednesday, Aug. 4

    WHAT:
Saratoga Race Course will host free oral cancer screenings for patrons on a first-come, first-served basis. Oral cancer was detected in at least one member of the public at the free oral cancer screening held at the track last summer. Screenings will showcase Trimira® LLC's award-winning Identafi® 3000 ultra oral cancer detection device, the world's first and only oral cancer screening tool to use a patented triple-wavelength ("multispectral") fluorescence and reflectance optical system.

    WHEN:
12 NOON to 4 PM Wednesday, August 4.

    WHERE:
Saratoga Race Course, 267 Union Avenue, Saratoga Springs, N.Y. 12866--3553. Telephone (718) 641-4700.

    WHO:
Renowned "airport dentist" Dr. Robert Trager, who has offices at JFK and LaGuardia International Airports in Queens, N.Y., has been organizing public oral cancer screenings for the past 25 years. Joining Dr. Trager will be volunteers from the New York State Dental Association (NYSDA), Nassau County Dental Society, and Fourth District Dental Society. Also participating will be NYSDA Executive Director Dr. Mark Feldman, who is former executive director of the American Dental Association (ADA).

    WHY:
Oral cancer kills someone every hour of every day. It is more deadly (in terms of five-year mortality rate) than cervical, thyroid, Hodgkin's lymphoma, testicular, laryngeal, or skin cancers. Forty percent of those diagnosed with oral cancer will be dead in five years. Early detection through regular screenings would improve the survival rate to 80+ percent.

    HOW:
The screenings will be conducted using Trimira® LLC's Identafi®, which incorporates the latest in high-speed, high-resolution optical processing technologies. Identafi® is a portable handheld that leverages research from scientists at The University of Texas, Rice University, and British Columbia Cancer Research Centre in Vancouver, Canada. Early detection of oral cancer translates into cure rates of greater than 80 percent, which is why the American Cancer Society (ACS) and ADA recommend opportunistic screening for oral cancer. ADA estimates that while 60 percent of Americans visit a dentist every year, fewer than 15 percent of those who regularly visit a dentist receive an oral cancer screening.

    IDENTAFI:
Identafi® 3000 ultra is the most powerful and accurate device for dentists and physicians to screen patients for signs of oral cancer. The device features patented technologies that are changing the diagnostic landscape. Identafi® 3000 ultra uses white, violet, and green-amber wavelengths of light to excite oral tissue in distinct ways. It enables those on the front line of detection to catch early indicators and stages of oral cancer and pre-cancer that are invariably missed by the naked eye. Adjunctive technology like oral cancer detection devices should be used in conjunction with the ADA's recommended conventional visual and tactile examination of the head, neck, and oral cavity. The gold standard of ascertaining whether a patient has oral cancer continues to be the biopsy.

    TRIMIRA:
Trimira® LLC is a private capital-funded company, with investment by Dallas cancer research philanthropist T. Boone Pickens, of oil and windfarming fame. Other Trimira® sister subsidiaries are working on screening and diagnostic devices for skin, cervical, gastrointestinal, and bladder cancers. Remicalm®, as the parent company, has licensed exclusive use of certain of its patents and patents pending for use as a cervical cancer product to be later expanded to include additional epithelial-based cancers. Remicalm®'s core technologies are based on high-speed, high-resolution capabilities from its patented optical processing technology platforms and include the ability to read metabolic and physiologic differences in diseased and healthy tissue in the human body.
