Identafi 3000 Ultra Oral Cancer Detection Device Used to Screen Crowds at Saratoga Race Course

New York State Dental Professionals Volunteer to Offer Public Free Oral Checkups in Blazing Summer Heat at Racetrack

SARATOGA SPRINGS, Aug. 4, 2010 — In spite of 100-degree summer heat and high humidity, the Jockey Silks Room at Saratoga Race Course today was packed with dozens of dentists volunteering their time to screen racegoers for the largely overlooked disease of oral cancer, which is epidemic, despite declines in alcohol and tobacco use.

Trimira® LLC's Identafi® 3000 ultra was used to do the screenings. The portable handheld device, which incorporates the latest in high-speed, high-resolution optical processing technologies, leverages research from scientists at The University of Texas, Rice University, and British Columbia Cancer Research Centre in Vancouver, Canada.

On hand at the 12-4 PM event were volunteers from the Nassau County Dental Society, Fourth District Dental Society, and New York State Dental Association (NYSDA). After each screening, NYSDA Public Relations Director Sandy DiNoto handed out dental goodie bags containing free samples of Colgate toothpaste and toothbrushes.

Helping to organize the annual oral cancer screening event was Dr. Robert Trager, renowned as the "airport dentist" for his offices at both LaGuardia and JFK International Airports. Trager reported that a number of people screened during the event were later tested for suspicious lesions disclosed by the Identafi 3000 ultra device, which uses white, violet, and green-amber wavelengths of light to excite oral tissue in distinct ways.

Identafi 3000 ultra enables dentists and other caregivers on the front line of cancer detection to catch early indicators and stages of oral cancer and pre-cancer that are invariably missed by the naked eye. The ADA continues to recommend, however, that conventional visual and tactile examination of the head, neck, and oral cavity also be conducted in conjunction with adjunctive technology like Identafi 3000 ultra. The gold standard of ascertaining whether a patient has oral cancer continues to be the biopsy.

One American dies every hour of every day from oral cancer. Early detection of oral cancer translates into cure rates of greater than 80 percent, which is why the American Cancer Society (ACS) and ADA recommend opportunistic screening for oral cancer. ADA estimates that while 60 percent of Americans visit a dentist every year, fewer than 15 percent of those who regularly visit a dentist receive an oral cancer screening.
